SEATTLE -- Not long ago, the Seattle Sounders found themselves needing to pick up as many points possible just to get back into playoff positioning. Aaron Donald Jersey . Very quickly, the Sounders made up the ground and find themselves as the points leaders in Major League Soccer. "Weve kept climbing, kept climbing and now were in first place. Now weve got to make sure we stay there and enjoy the view a little bit," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. Obafemi Martins scored just three minutes into the match to give Seattle an early lead, Lamar Neagle added a second goal in the 38th minute, and the Sounders took over the MLS points lead with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Friday night. The Sounders (15-8-4) vaulted past Salt Lake in the Western Conference standings and now sit atop the entire league with 49 points after their fifth straight victory. The Sounders are one-point ahead of RSL (14-9-6) and four ahead of the Eastern Conference trio of Montreal, New York and Sporting Kansas City with about six weeks remaining in the regular season. Seattle has also played two fewer games than Salt Lake. Its a stark turn from Seattles slumping start back in the spring when it took just two points from its first five matches. But Seattle has won eight of nine and still have games in hand on most of the league. "Its tremendous, especially with what weve had to go through to get here," Seattle defender Zach Scott said. Neagle scored in his third straight match and Seattle dominated the first half with U.S. national team stars Eddie Johnson and Clint Dempsey sitting on the bench as reserves. Seattle improved to 38-0-8 in its last 46 matches when getting the first goal and are 8-0-2 all-time playing in front of crowds bigger than 40,000 at home. Fridays game was played before 55,107, the second-largest home crowd this season. And it very easily could have been a bigger victory with the Sounders failing to finish a number of chances or Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando making big saves. Both teams were at nearly full strength following World Cup qualifying. Midfielder Kyle Beckerman and Rimando started for Salt Lake, even with Beckerman playing 90 minutes against Mexico on Tuesday. Seattle chose to bring Dempsey and Johnson off the bench after the pair played extensive minutes against both Costa Rica and Mexico. Dempsey came on in the 61st minute replacing Marc Burch. It was just the second appearance at home for Dempsey since his signing in early August. Within 90 seconds of being on the field, Dempsey was chopped down by Ned Grabavoy, drawing a yellow card for the reckless tackle. Johnson came on in the 75th minute. "The team has really been playing well and credit goes to them," Dempsey said. "Thats a game thats easy to go into when its 2-0." By the time they got on the field, the Sounders were well on their way to victory. "Its obviously a very scary situation. Were down two goals, and he brings on Eddie Johnson and Clint Dempsey," Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis said. Martins goal was his eighth of the season and was a quick strike due to the hustle of midfielder Andy Rose. Martins pass was close to going over the end line, but Rose was able to chase it down and place a perfect centring pass to Martins open in front of the net. Neagles eighth goal was created by the lengthy run from defender DeAndre Yedlin, who found open space along the right side. Yedlin carried into the penalty box and had the time to pick out Neagle making a move away from the goal and into the middle of the box where he was unmarked for the easy goal. Seattle appeared to get a lucky break in the 80th minute when Javier Morales free kick from distance cleared traffic in the penalty box and bounced into the stomach of Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, whose feet were in the goal. Officials ruled Gspurning kept the ball from fully crossing the goal line. "If youre not sharp against a team like Seattle, they can really break, theyre dangerous on the counter," Beckerman said. "That was the key tonight. We just werent at our best. We lost to a team thats really good in their place, so credit to them." Team officials did not indicate the extent of the injury Saturday, simply listing Rose with "left knee soreness." Rose has played two preseason games without any sign of problems. The first NBA game in South America now will be missing its biggest star. LANDOVER, Md. -- In a span of seven Washington Redskins offensive plays, Justin Tuck sacked Robert Griffin III four times. In a span of 10 pass attempts, Eli Manning completed all 10. If Tuck and Manning had been humming like that all season, the New York Giants wouldnt be on the fringes of the playoff race. As it is, theyve made it to 5-7 -- not bad after an 0-6 start -- with Sunday nights 24-17 win over the Redskins. "If I was standing here with four sacks and a loss, I wouldnt give two cents," said Tuck, who had only 2 1/2 sacks on the season entering the game. "But we got a win. I played pretty good tonight." The win keeps the Giants (5-7) two games behind division leaders Dallas and Philadelphia with four to play. "After last weeks loss we were probably going to have to win five in a row," Manning said, "and this is the first one," The Redskins (3-9), meanwhile, were eliminated from the post-season for the 17th time in 21 years and finished the season 0-5 in prime time. "When youre out of it, yeah, its very disappointing. ... You dont like to play for pride," Washington coach Mike Shanahan said, "but sometimes thats the card thats dealt, and thats where were at right now." The Giants let Griffin do essentially whatever he wanted early on -- the quarterback completed 16 of 17 passes in the first half -- but Tuck and the Giants defence took over when it mattered, holding the Redskins to 96 second-half yards. Linebacker Jon Beason finished with 17 tackles in a game New York played without defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) and cornerback Corey Webster (ankle). The defence clinched the game with one final big play, when safety Will Hill wrestled the ball from Pierre Garcon after the receiver made a catch near midfield with 1:21 remaining as the Redskins were driving for a possible tying score. The turnover came two plays after a confusing moment in which Washington apparently thought it had a first down -- the sideline down marker was at "1" -- when it was actually third-and-1. Shanahan vented at officials over the miscue, which referee Jeff Triplette said was caused when the chains were incorrectly moved, but the Redskins technically converted the fourth-and-1 anyway because Garcon had enough yardage for the first down before he was stripped of the ball. Manning and Griffin put on quite the statistical show in the first half -- they were a combined 26 for 29 for 250 yards at halftime -- before the same troubles that have beset both teams resurfaced in droves. Custom Los Angeles Rams Jerseys. Manning had a high throw tipped for an interception in the third quarter, and he remains on course to have more interceptions than touchdown passes for the first time since his rookie season. Manning was also sacked three times, giving him a career-high of 31. But the Redskins could only convert Mannings interception into a field goal -- even though they got the ball at the New York 12. That gave Washington a 17-14 lead, which evaporated after a gaffe by the consensus worst special teams units in the league. Redskins long snapper Kyle Nelson sent a bouncing grounder back to punter Sav Rocca, leading to a blocked punt that was compounded by a holding penalty on Nelson that added 10 yards to the final spot. The Giants took over at the Washington 46 and needed only four plays and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on cornerback DeAngelo Hall to produce Andre Browns 1-yard touchdown run that made the score 21-17, putting the Giants ahead for good early in the fourth quarter. "You cant stop yourselves," Shanahan said. "We had some penalties. We had some dropped balls. We had a couple missed assignments. You couple all those things and thats how you lose a football game." Josh Brown added an insurance 39-yard field goal with 2:32 remaining. Manning finished 22 for 28 for 235 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Myers in the second quarter that was part of the 10 completions in a row. After his stellar first half, Griffin was 8 for 15 for 58 yards in the second half for a final line of 24 for 32 for 207 yards and a season-high 88 yards rushing on 12 carries. He wasnt sacked in the first half, but he went down five times after halftime. "He outran me on a few plays," Tuck said, "but I thought he looked good until we were able to make some adjustments." Notes: The Redskins scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the first time this season. ... The Giants had only one running play of 20-plus yards entering the game, but they had two on the same drive, including a 23-yard touchdown run by Brown that made the score 14-7. ...
